Can you believe we are in October already? It was hard for me to believe
too, but the awakening arrived last week when we were hit by a hurricane
Matthew. It's been 10 years since we were hit the last time. And always
during September-October. But I remember what it was like to sit inside
the house with no power, no air conditioning, no TV, no Facebook......
and simply out of boredom eat non-perishable junk food for a week,
washing it down with a beverage of choice. While breathing in and
out hot and humid air and sweating to no end.... Gloomy picture, right?
Thankfully high-end technology is capable of predicting such
disasters pretty accurately these days which give us enough time to
prepare. Board our houses, stock up on food, water, batteries, candles
and other necessities, aka red wine... Comparing to 10 years ago,
this time, we were a lot luckier. The hurricane passed us being offshore,
so we have not received all the devastation we would have received if it
made a landfall. But nevertheless, we were scared, fueled by the media
frenzy and non-stop news coverage warning about an upcoming Armageddon.
This time, we were very lucky, but our neighbors in Haiti were not. They
were directly hit by this hurricane that caused massive devastation to
people's homes, taking lives of hundreds of people and leaving the
survivors with nothing. Literally. My heart is breaking seeing the
footage on TV showing debris that used to be someone's home, mudslides,
floods, mothers holding their tiny babies and having nowhere to go. The
situation is very heartbreaking to see. I cannot even imagine what it is
like to be in it. So here at Sweetsation we are determined to do our part,
even as little as it can be. But for those people, every little help is a
very much needed help. And can be life saving.
