Who or what is Skin Deep or EWG?

Skin Deep or The Environmental Working Group has developed a Database with hundreds of cosmetic products in it, where each product have been allocated a certain Toxicity rating. The EWG developed their ratings by pairing ingredients in personal care products against 50 definitive toxicity and regulatory databases. It is the largest and most reliable source of its kind available to the public. Because the FDA does not require companies to test their own products for safety, cosmetic companies can put virtually any ingredient into their products thus exposing you and your family to known toxic chemicals. EWG does not endorse any products or brands and is an independent, non-profit organization with a mission to "use the power of information to protect human health and the environment." Anyone can research their favorite products in Skin Deep Database and if you don't like what you see, you can find better alternatives there. EWG updates the Skin Deep Database based on new information and new research as it becomes available, so visiting the Database regularly would be helpful.

What is the Compact for Safe Cosmetics?
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a coalition of nonprofit and environmental organizations with the goal of "eliminating the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, and other health problems." When companies sign the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics", they pledge to make safer products and remove or replace hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives within 3 years. To date, more than 1,000 companies have signed The Compact.
